Date: July 13, 2009 11:48PM Steak in a Sack Get Together
June 6, 2009 was the date, and we had between 25-30 people show, making it arguably our second largest turnout. We had some of the, “Regulars”, show up, but as always we had new folks show, curious to see what the ‘Sack looked like, as well as Marlow Heights. [marlowheights60sand70s.com] We’re planning the next get together to be August 15 or August 22. Any preference? Email me and let me know by next weekend, July 18, because that’s when I’ll pick the date. And you Cavaliers, where were you at the last get together? There were a total of...0 Cavs there! Finding/Buying School Yearbooks If any of you have had an experience like me, with not having any of my high school yearbooks, there are options. The best and probably least expensive is to contact the contact the school you attended. Many schools still have some copies left over from each graduating year, and will generally sell to people for a very minimal amount. I was able to purchase a 1974 yearbook for $10 a couple of years ago directly at the school, and just last month I purchased 1973 and 1975 Potomac yearbooks, each for $30. A lady who currently works in the Potomac Guidance Department, Anna Crowe, was super. She was able to locate the yearbooks for me, and went well above and beyond by actually showing up at our June 6 get together at Steak in a Sack. Can you beat that, yearbooks delivered in person from the school at Steak in a Sack? If any of you are interested in acquiring Potomac yearbooks, give Anna a call at Potomac, at (301) 702-3900, and tell her Chuck from Marlow Heights 60s and 70s sent you. You may have to call a few times before you get through but it’s well worth it. I still don’t have a copy of the Potomac 1976 yearbook, so if any of you out there have a copy you’d like to sell me, please let me know. As for other schools (Crossland, Suitland, etc.), contact those schools and ask the same thing. If you can’t find anything directly from your old alma mater, try eBay. You will probably pay more, but then again, I purchased a copy of the Crossland 1972 yearbook recently for $15. Suitland Jr. High Pictures A recent site visitor wants to know if any of you if you have any photos from Suitland Jr. High School, probably from the mid 60s to the early 70s. If so, submit them to me and I’ll put them up on the site. The same goes for any other school, neighborhood, hangout, etc. in Marlow Heights and vicinity. Supernatural Theater/Great Zucchini and Sir Graves Ghastly Do any of you remember the old TV horror show hosts, The Great Zucchini and Sir Graves Ghastly? Zucchini was on WDCA Channel 20 in the late 60s, broadcast in glorious black & white, and was known as Supernatural Theatre. Sir Graves Ghastly was broadcast on WTOP Channel 9 during the early 70s. I even watched the taping of a couple of shows at WTOP studios, with my good friend, Billy Hull, back in September of 1970. An independent film maker, Sean Kotz, is putting out a movie about the old Virginia TV horror show hosts in the next few months, and will include Zucchini and Sir Graves Ghastly. Yours truly was interviewed on camera, to describe my recollections of the shows, and will be included in the movie. If any of you remember these horror show hosts and would like to share your memories with Sean, go to his web site, Virginia Creepers: [www.virginiacreepersmovie.com] Tour of Potomac in October It’s not been arranged yet, but there is a possibility that our current contact at Potomac will arrange for a group of us to tour inside Potomac, during one of the school’s home football games. I plan to schedule this on the same Saturday as a Steak in a Sack get together, and will hold it prior to the get together. If you want to roam the halls of Potomac again, here is a good chance to do so, so stay tuned to the newsletter. Possible Potomac reunion football game in November at the school Another event in the works is to hold an all alumni football game at Potomac field, sometime in November. Stay tuned for an announcement. In Passing According to the Washington Post, John Buckley recently passed away. Among many other accomplishments, John was a coach of boys’ recreation league football in Anacostia in the 1950s. I suspect that some of the boys who played for him eventually ended up in Marlow Heights and vicinity, since many families did migrate from Southeast DC to Marlow Heights, Hillcrest Heights, Suitland, etc., in the late 50s and early to mid 60s. [www.washingtonpost.com] Dunkin Donuts, St. Barnabas Road A web site contributor is working on a write up of the Dunkin Donuts that was on St. Barnabas Road, across from the old Safeway and Dart Drug, for years, and was owned and operated by the very popular Mr. Watson. Stay tuned. Keep the memories alive, Chuck Fraley www.marlowheights60sand70s.com Bringing you fun memories of Marlow Heights and vicinity of the 60s and 70s! Date: July 15, 2009 08:47AM Yikes! No Cavaliers??? I'd love to attend one of the famous Steak in the Sak get togethers, but I'm currently not able to walk, let alone drive! It would be nice though for some of us Cavaliers would put our heads together and make a showing at one of these events in the near future! In the meantime Chuck, God Bless you for keeping the spirit alive. You are a real trooper to organize these mini-reunions and report back to everyone on the news. Thanks! Date: July 15, 2009 11:10PM Glad to hear we might get some of you Cavs back out to the 'Sack. It's a lot of fun, and there will be people present that attended not only from Potomac but Suitland, Oxon Hill, Surrattsville, etc. Even if you may not know someone there, it's very likely in talking to someone you will find out you have mutual friends from sometime in the area way back when. And then begins the, "Do you remember when...?", conversations.
Hey, I haven't put the word out yet in a newsletter, but you guys are getting it here first. The next Steak in a Sack get together will be August 22, from 2-5. As always, those that stick around after that can do the, "tour", of Marlow Heights, Temple Hills, Hillcrest Heights, etc., depending upon where the group wants to go.
