Date: September 20, 2009 01:29PM Steak in a Sack Get Together, August 22
We had 54 people show up at our latest gathering, on August 22, our biggest turnout yet. Though the afternoon eventually turned into a downpour at times, that didn’t deter people from coming out and seeing old friends, classmates, and seeing new faces, who also grew up in Marlow Heights and vicinity of the 60s and 70s. The photos follow, although I am still working on getting the rest of them up, as well as identifying everyone in the pictures. If you can help in naming people, please email me: [marlowheights60sand70s.com] We are tentatively planning the next get together at Steak in a Sack to be October 24. This is tentative because we are still awaiting word whether or not a current employee of Potomac Senior High will be able to chaperone us on a tour of the school that day, prior to the regular 2 p.m. start of the Steak in a Sack get together. Stay tuned, and if we can arrange the tour, we will definitely need a head count of people who will come out for the Potomac school tour. Marlow Heights 60s and 70s “Back to School” Dance, October 3, 6 p.m. to 12 midnight We will be holding a dance to commemorate the 60s and 70s of our Marlow Heights and vicinity past, and the schools we attended, at the American Legion in Chesapeake Beach. The DJ will be playing only 60s and 70s hits, and everyone is encouraged to dress as you did during your 60s or 70s youth (Mods, Blocks, Collegiates, Hippies, etc). We will also be serving Mighty Mo’s (aka Royal Burgers), recreated using the official Hot Shoppes recipe, and yours truly personally demonstrated to the American Legion staff the way it’s done, as I worked at the Jr. Hot Shoppes at Iverson Mall. There will also be fries, onion rings, and the Hot Shoppes Orange Freezes, soft drinks, beer, and a pay as you go bar. Here are the particulars: Cost is $20.00 per person. Send check or money order made out to American Legion Post 206, and mail to same C/O Kirk Larman, PO Box 428, Chesapeake Beach, Maryland 20732. Please indicate on envelope, “Marlow Heights 60s and 70s Back to School Night”, and put names of attendees in the check memo, or separate slip of paper. We will transfer names to a list. Tickets will also be sold at the door. Call 301-855-6466, or email me if you have any questions. So far we’ve sold approximately 200 tickets, and the American Legion hall only holds a capacity of 330, so get your tickets. We expect a lot of alumni from Potomac, Crossland, Suitland, McNamara, LaReine, and Central, as well as other area schools, so come on out and be true to your school! Special request: we have an old friend and classmate from the Potomac Class of ’74 who lives in the Hagerstown area, and is looking for a ride to the dance, if anyone living within that region is going to the dance. If so, please contact me and I’ll put the two of you in touch. In Passing Former long-time director of the Silver Hill Boys Club, Mr. Eugene O'Neil, passed away last month at Southern Maryland Hospital, age 83. As many of you played for, or supported, the Silver Hill Boys Club, many of you remembered what an outstanding director he was. But also know that that Mr. O’Neil served our country with the 80th Division in World War II, as well as being the National Commander of the 80th Division’s Veterans Association. As always, until next time… Keep the memories alive, Chuck Fraley www.marlowheights60sand70s.com Bringing you fun memories of Marlow Heights and vicinity of the 60s and 70s!
